How to protect your skin in the winter
Hello Bloggers, its official! Winter is in town and its here to stay. As exciting as this may be for many people, for some of us it means long months of dry and irritable skin. The fact is that this time of year, just applying lotion doesn’t do the trick. Those cold winter winds cause our skin to dry and crack more than ever. So this week I have decided to share some tips with you, so that you can keep your skin beautiful and glowing all year round. First and foremost, super hot showers are a no no! Although, it’s a wonderful feeling to be able to come home from that cold winter and take a nice hot shower. It’s a known fact that hot water dries the skin. So try lukewarm water, it will be just as gratifying. Also be careful with the types of soaps you use. Some soap can dry your skin out more than others and combine that with the winter winds, it can be a lethal combination for your skin.
Continue to protect your skin from sun damage. Since you're usually bundled up when outside in the wintertime, you don't need to slather sunscreen all over yourself, but try to wear a makeup or moisturizer with SPF 15 on your face throughout the winter. Do wear a high-SPF sunscreen if you'll be skiing; some of the most severe sunburns may occur on the slopes, since the snow reflects the sunlight. If you'll be on a cruise, be sure to wear a good sunscreen just as you would during the summertime. Don't forget your lips; wear lip balm or lipstick with sunscreen. I know it seems weird to be applying sunscreen in the winter, but trust me the sun burns just as much in the winter as it does in the summer.
Many researchers say that it’s good to exfoliate your skin in the winter, because since our skin dries more than usual we are carrying around a lot of dead cells. So if you have a daily facial or body scrub that you like, it will certainly do you a lot of good. Depending on the severity of the weather in your area, many people also use Vaseline or super moisturizing lotions to keep the skin healthy.
Last but not least turn the heat down at home, we are all tempted to keep the heat on high because let’s face it, its freezing outside. However, extreme heat can dry the skin out a lot, so try to keep a good balance of things. Keep the heat at a moderate level and crack a window here and there.
