Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
As you all may or may not know, September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month. Sadly, cancer is a disease that does not discriminate; you can get it at any age and be of any race. However, there are some types of cancer that affect some specific genders and ages, more than others. One of these diseases is Prostate Cancer. The people who are at a higher risk of getting prostate cancer are men older than 60, men who have a father or brother who have had prostate cancer and men who have been around Agent Orange. You can see who else is at risk by visiting this site http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. There comes a time in a man’s life when he must be more aware of the changes that are occurring in his body. This time may vary from one man to another, but for most people in general it is when you have reached adulthood. In order to know what to look out for you have to know your body, and you have to be able to identify if something has changed.
Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the prostate gland. The prostate gland is a small structure that makes up part of a man’s reproductive system. It goes around the urethra tube, which carries urine out of the body. Some of the symptoms of prostate cancer include: slow urinary stream, blood in urine, dribbling or leakage of urine, or bone pain and tenderness in the lower back and pelvic area. In order to be diagnosed with cancer a biopsy must be done. As far as treatment is concerned, it is determined on a case by case basis. However, overall treatment is either to surgically remove the affected area or treated with radiation/chemotherapy.
Overcoming an illness of this magnitude is not easy. It’s important to have a lot of support when dealing with cancer, whether it’s from a family member or simply a support group. Cancer is a serious disease and more often than not it completely changes a person’s quality of life. It is possible to lower the risks of prostate cancer by eating foods low in fat and high in Omega 3 content. It’s important to keep in mind that if you or a loved one is dealing with this or any other illness, you are not alone. First Care of New York will always be here.
