You are what you eat?!
When you turn on the TV lately, it seems that there are a few topics that jump out at you more often than others; (obviously, aside from this year’s upcoming presidential elections). The one thing that jumps out at me the most is what’s going on in legislation regarding Mayor Bloomberg’s Anti-Obesity initiative. Like any other piece of legislation there are people who support the mayors’ initiative, and there are people who are completely against this. Although, I haven’t decided as of yet what my official take on this matter will be; I want to take a moment to shed some light on the ads that are being used to promote these initiatives, because they are certainly bringing some alarming facts to our attention. In New York Cities’ latest health bulletin, there is an illustration of someone pouring soda into a glass. The image is disturbing because as the soda falls into the glass it turns into a blob of fat.
This is repulsive to say the least but the message is clear. “America is pouring on the pounds”. The fact of the matter is that Americans consume 200 to 300 more calories each day than they did 30 years ago (nyc.gov/health). Children and teenagers in America eat a diet filled with foods like: sugary breakfast cereals, sweetened fruit drinks, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, french fries and white bread. These foods cause obesity, and they don't provide the nutrients necessary for healthy growth and development. Truth is, kids in America drink more sweetened soft drinks than milk nowadays! As a result of these unhealthy food and drink choices, people in America are at risk of being overweight, having diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma, osteoporosis and depression. I don’t share this with you, to scare you, but we need to pay more attention to what we are eating. I don’t know if it is right for the government to pass legislation that puts restrictions on our food intake. However, I will say that something definitely needs to change.
