The Healing Powers of Turmeric

Hello Bloggers! In this week’s blog I would to discuss the healing qualities of a plant called turmeric. Turmeric is a plant that is grown in India and in many other regions of Asia. It has been generally used for Herbal remedies. This plant is usually gathered, ground, and boiled to create an orange powder that is commonly used as a spice in something that many of us know as curry. It  can also be used as a dye for foods such as mustard, cheese, and margarine.
Over the span of time, Turmeric has been known to cure a wide variety of illnesses. It has been used to relieve everything from skin conditions to the common cold. However, what has recently sparked people’s interest in the healing powers of turmeric is that it is believed to help prevent and slow the growth of certain types of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. It is also an anti-inflammatory which can help ease joint pain in people suffering from arthritis. There is a special ingredient in Turmeric called Curcumin which is one of the main agents that aids in the healing process of illnesses. Curcumin creates antioxidants, which help protect and rebuild the cells in our body.  According to the American Cancer society, “Human studies of Curcumin in cancer prevention and treatment are in the very early stages. A number of studies of curcumin have shown promising results. It can kill cancer cells in laboratory dishes and also reduces growth of surviving cells”.

However, there are also some negative side effects to be aware of if turmeric is taken in large quantities or when an individual already suffers from a particular illness. Those who take turmeric in large quantities can possibly experience diarrhea, sweating and nausea. While turmeric is considered a ‘safe’ herb, it shouldn’t be ingested if suffering from congestive heart disease, liver disease, or of course without consulting your doctor. Being that turmeric is an herb that is still being studied, we are still unclear of all the possible effects it may have on medications that you are currently taking.
