Allergies are upon us!

A lot of people think of the spring-time as “allergy season” however, allergies roll over into the summer and even the fall season depending on what type of allergies one has. Add spending more time outdoors with air pollution, heat, humidity and you have a trigger for summer/fall allergies as well. Sneezing, coughing, runny nose, watery eyes, difficulty breathing, cramps, and vomiting are all allergy symptoms. At First Care of New York we want you to be informed on the different levels of allergies from mild, moderate and severe, how they affect you and how to protect yourself.

Mild symptoms of allergies include rash, itchy and/or watery eyes, congestion and do not spread to other parts of the body. They are usually light symptoms that are inconvenient or bothersome and not life threatening. Most people know when they are starting to get their “annual” allergies and some people try to be brave and they just deal with it as best they can and continue on with their lives. Taking some over the counter medication helps alleviate the symptoms. Moderate symptoms may spread to other parts of the body and include itchiness and difficulty breathing. This is more than your usual runny nose. This can become one of those invasive “weekend flu” type of allergy that bogs you down.  It will give you most or all of the mild symptoms and may include itchiness that is considered eczema.
According to WebMD.com “The most common type of eczema is known as atopic dermatitis, or atopic eczema. Atopic refers to a group of diseases with an often inherited tendency to develop other allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever. Although there is no cure, most people can effectively manage their disease with medical treatment and by avoiding irritants. The condition is not contagious and can't be spread from person to person.”  Once you acquire such symptoms, most of us don’t feel well enough to go to school/work. Usually after a day or several days we get well enough to go back to school/work by taking some over the counter medication.
One must be weary of other serious allergy symptoms, especially in kids who have a history of asthma. WebMD describes the condition as “Anaphylaxis may begin with severe itching of the eyes or face and, within minutes, progress to more serious symptoms. These symptoms include: swallowing and breathing difficulties, abdominal pain, cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, hives, and angioedema (swelling similar to hives, but the swelling is beneath the skin instead of on the surface). If you have symptoms of anaphylaxis, seek emergency medical attention immediately. The condition can quickly result in an increased heart rate, sudden weakness, a drop in blood pressure, shock, and ultimately unconsciousness and death.”  The surprising part is that (though rare) it to is also caused by pollen and other inhaled allergens. The most common summer allergens are Weeds - Ragweed, Cockleweed, Pigweed, Russian thistle, Sagebrush, Tumbleweed and Grasses – Bermuda, Blue grasses, Orchard, Red Top, Sweet vernal, Timothy and different types of flowers as well. Protect yourself from pollens and other allergens.
Most regional weather stations tell you how high the pollen count is for today. If it is high, try to stay indoors and avoid exposure to whatever you are allergic too.  Avoiding exposure is the best method to avoid having allergies. Secondly, clean yourself off regularly – Pollen and other allergens get trapped in your clothing and hair. Lastly, try to keep your environment clean. By keeping your environment clean, you greatly reduce your chances of getting allergies from yourself or other people.
